DOD P2 Partnership Forms Work Group to Address Solid Waste Issues

As mentioned in the last issue of From the Source, the Department of Defense (DOD) signed a charter with P2AD to create the Georgia DOD Pollution Prevention Partnership to reduce pollution and improve the efficiency of the military. One of the priority areas identified by the partnership is solid waste. Therefore, the Solid Waste and Recycling Work Team (Work Team) was formed to specifically address such solid waste issues as recycling, composting, household hazardous waste (HHW), and construction and demolition waste.

The Work Team will identify priority solid waste streams and impediments to reducing or recycling solid waste, as well as jointly tacking a series of solid waste projects. The first project will focus on preventing and properly managing household hazardous waste. Several of the Work Team's desired accomplishments and deliverables include the development of a Standard Operating Procedure for Household Hazardous Waste, creation of a training brochure, development of an information manual addressing the key issues associated with managing household hazardous waste including setting up a collection or exchange program, case studies on successful HHW programs, and designing a template for military facilities to use in writing newsletter articles or Public Service Announcements. Once the project is completed, the Work Group will use resources such as the Internet to make the information available to other military facilities nationwide.
