Fort McPherson

Executive Summary

Fort McPherson is a relatively small Army installation. Due to the chiefly administrative nature of Fort McPherson, the installation is a small quantity generator of hazardous waste. Even so, Fort McPherson has actively been incorporating Pollution Prevention into its daily operations.

Introduction

Fort McPherson is located in northwestern Georgia in the metropolitan Atlanta area, covering an area of approximately 500 acres. Fort McPherson has approximately 5,000 military and civilian employees. The garrison mission is to support the command organizations located on post including: Forces Command; U.S. Army Reserve Command Headquarters; Headquarters, Third U.S. Army; and U.S. Army Forces Central Command.

Pollution Prevention Program

Fort McPherson has a Pollution Prevention Plan to guide efforts to reduce its impact on the environment.

Hazardous Waste Goal

Fort McPherson set a pollution prevention goal of reducing the generation of hazardous waste by 25% by December 31, 1999 from the baseline year of 1994. To date, Fort McPherson has reduced hazardous waste generation by approximately 30%, thereby achieving the goal. Most of the reductions achieved at Fort McPherson in hazardous waste generation were achieved through the elimination of wet chemical printing processes and control of construction-related products such as paint-related materials and adhesives. Further reduction has been achieved by replacing listed chlorinated solvents with non-listed solvents (e.g. citrus-based) in the equipment maintenance parts washers.

Solid Waste Goal

The trend at Fort McPherson has shown an increase in total solid waste generated due to added tenant load such as the U.S. Army Reserve Command Headquarters, the new Barracks Complex and the combined Medical and Dental facility. To decrease the amount of solid waste disposed, the various Commands participate in the garrison recycling program.

Future P2 Plans

Future P2 opportunities which Ft McPherson plans to implement include taking advantage of HQ Forces Command funded training of unit and installation personnel in Pollution Prevention concepts. The purpose is to integrate the Pollution Prevention mindset beyond the environmental arena into the tenants' everyday operations
