Fort Gillem

Executive Summary

The Fort Gillem mission requires only light industrial operations including seven motor pool areas. Accordingly, Fort Gillem is a small quantity generator of hazardous waste. Fort Gillem has a Pollution Prevention Plan to guide efforts to reduce its impact on the environment.

Introduction

Fort Gillem is an U.S. Army installation, covering an area of approximately 1,500 acres. Fort Gillem is located in northwestern Georgia in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Fort Gillem has approximately 2,000 military and civilian employees. The garrison mission is to provide vast storage capability for the Army and Air Force Exchange System (AAFES) distribution center and support for the tenant organizations located on post including Headquarters, First U.S. Army; Headquarters, Third Region, U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command; and Headquarters, U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Laboratory.

Pollution Prevention Program

Hazardous Waste Goal

Fort Gillem set a pollution prevention goal of reducing the generation of hazardous waste by 25% by December 31, 1999 from the baseline year of 1994. To date, Fort Gillem has reduced hazardous waste generation by approximately 10%. Approximately 80% of hazardous waste generated on post is generated from the Equipment Maintenance vehicle painting operation. This waste stream should be eliminated when the water-reducible Chemical Agent Resistant Coatings paint becomes available (protective paint used on military vehicles), or when a workable solvent recycle/ reclaim mechanism is put in place. Additional reductions are anticipated installation-wide through the control of construction-related products, such as paint-related materials and adhesives. Some reduction has been achieved by replacing listed chlorinated solvents with non-listed solvents (e.g. citrus based) in the equipment maintenance parts washers.

Solid Waste Goal

The solid waste generation trend at Fort Gillem is likely to increase due to anticipated increased tenant load. The installation Environmental Division is working toward full participation of tenant activities in the garrison recycling program and individual programs to decrease the amount of solid waste disposed.

Future P2 Plans

Future pollution prevention opportunities Fort Gillem plans to implement include taking advantage of HQ Forces Command funded training of unit and installation personnel in pollution prevention concepts. The purpose is to integrate the pollution prevention mindset beyond the environmental arena into the tenants' everyday operations.
