Director's Column
From the Source - Fall 1997
by G. Robert Kerr
As many of you know from reading our past newsletters or from your attendance at the event, on October 30th and 31st, the Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P2AD) co-sponsored the Georgia Governor's Conference on Pollution Prevention and the Environment in Atlanta. Over 500 people attended the conference, a number which exceeded our expectations. A gathering of this size requires a tremendous amount of behind-the-scenes work to successfully accomplish, and I would like to thank a number of individuals and groups whose efforts made this conference possible. First my thanks to the Governor's Environmental Advisory Council and its chair Jim Stokes. The Council co-sponsored the conference and was instrumental in developing the initial concept of an environmental conference to highlight the work of the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) and P2AD. I would like to thank Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Lonice Barrett for his participation in the event. Also, I want to thank Harold Reheis, David Word, and their staff in EPD, as well as the great staff at P2AD, for their hard work and dedication, both in planning for and speaking at the conference. My thanks also go to all of the speakers who shared their expertise. Special thanks go to Ray Anderson of Interface, Inc. for his outstanding luncheon speech. Lastly, I want to thank all the attendees of the conference. We sincerely appreciate your interest in the Division's programs, your input on environmental issues facing the state, and your commitment to environmental improvements in the future. We hope that you found the conference to be a learning experience about pollution prevention and Georgia's environmental challenges.
It was also the Division's distinct pleasure to recognize a very special group of companies during the conference. The closing luncheon served as the first annual recognition and awards ceremony for P2AD's Pollution Prevention Partners and the three inaugural winners of the Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention. My congratulations go to all of the Partners and Award winners. Each of you has shown outstanding dedication to the ideals of pollution prevention, and we look forward to watching your continued progress in reducing pollution.
