Total waste management costs can range from $900 - $1,300 per house in the Atlanta area.
Waste generation rates in Atlanta are slightly higher than the national average. Waste generated during residential construction in Atlanta can be as high as 10 tons per house.

This report provides information on generation, characteristics and opportunities to recycle the estimated 216,000 to 330,000 tons of asphalt shingles generated in Georgia each year.

In 1998, P²AD and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center (www.nahbrc.org) conducted waste assessments at several residential construction sites in Atlanta. The purpose of the assessments was to characterize the waste streams, identify current waste management practices and determine the average cost of waste management services. One of the key findings was that the percentage of wood generated onsite is higher than the national average.
Summary of the waste audit
On October 1, 1998, P²AD in conjunction with the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association (www.atlantahomebuilders.com) and the NAHB held a Residential Construction Waste Management Roundtable in Tucker, Georgia. Representatives from state and local government, developers, builders, Habitat for Humanity, suppliers, recyclers, equipment manufacturers and waste haulers attended the half-day interactive session and discussed current waste management practices and how to increase recycling and identified opportunities and impediments for diverting construction waste from landfills. Participants made several recommendations including: conducting demonstration projects (e.g., land applying drywall and on-site separation of materials for recycling), preparing fact sheets, and partnering with non-profit organizations, such as Southface (www.southface.org) to promote recycling and waste reduction practices. P²AD is using the recommendations to prioritize future C&D activities.

The DoD Solid Waste and Recycling Work Team held an open forum on construction and demolition debris management in May 1999. Industry speakers updated attendees on grinding construction debris, the feasibility of mobile grinding, recycling asphalt shingles, upcoming regulatory issues and sustainable construction practices.

In both 1998 and 1999, P²AD was one of the sponsors of GreenPrints, one of the premier conferences in the country on sustainable construction and design that attracts an international audience and respected speakers in the field. The conference is hosted by Southface, an Atlanta-based non-profit that is one of the foremost leaders in the country on sustainable design and construction.
